The Colors of Autumn

I love the fall. I love the spring with it's vibrant greens and yellows. But most of all I love seeing the beautiful leaves of autumn.

These leaves have fallen to the ground so soon they will be gone and we will have to wait through a long winter before we can enjoy the new growth and colors of spring.

In August I drove down to Santa Rosa, California for my granddaughter's wedding. I decided to take a little side trip to Ferndale. This city contains dozens of well-preserved Victorian storefronts and homes. Ferndale is the northern gateway to California's Lost Coast and the city, which is sited on the edge of a wide plain near the mouth of the Eel River, is also located near the extensive preserves of Coast Redwood forests.

I drove around looking at the various Victorian buildings and decided this mansion was my favorite. It is now a Bed and Breakfast.

I am now a member of the Caveman Camera Club, serving as Vice President. We have a competition meeting the first Wednesday of the month and an educational meeting on the third Wednesday of the month from September through May each year. The competition is divided between assigned subjects and open subjects.

I enjoy the competition and endeavor to do my best there. Last evening this photo was judged in second place in the assigned category. The subject was patriotic. Here is my entry.

Memorial Day

Grants Pass, Oregon Memorial Cemetery dressed for Memorial Day 2011

You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Written: 1906 by George M Cohan
Stage Musical: George Washington, Jr.
First: Sold over one million sheet music copies
Story behind song:
Cohan met a veteran of the Gettysburg battle. The vet held a carefully folded, ragged old flag and said, "She's a grand old rag." Originally, the title You're a Grand Old Rag. Many objected to calling the flag a "rag" and Cohan changed the song's title.

Mexican Restaurant Mural

This is a life size mural painted on the wall of a Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. Recognize anyone? LOL. I got a big kick out of this one.

PS: I will be signing off for a while because I am having back surgery tomorrow. Back soon!
