Sunset at the Lower Kalamath Reserve

A friend and I went down into California yesterday to Tule Lake
and the Lower Kalamath Reserve.
Last night we saw the most dazzling sunset I think I have ever seen.
The colors were dazzling and almost blinding at their peak.
The pointy mountain is Mount Shasta.

Downtown Grants Pass, OR

Early Hudson's Bay Company hunters and trappers, following the Siskiyou Trail, passed through the site beginning in the 1820s. In the late 1840s, settlers (mostly American) following the Applegate Trail began traveling through the area on their way to the Willamette Valley. The name was selected to honor General U.S. Grant's success at Vicksburg and a post office was established on March 22, 1865. The city of Grants Pass was incorporated in 1887, a year after it had become the county seat.

Getty Villa

From my recent trip to California. I had been to the Villa years ago but it has been completely renovated. There were many interesting exhibits as well as the beautiful building it's self.

Harvest Time

The world record pumpkin recorded this year weighted in at 1,725 pounds

Pumpkins are believed to have originated in Central America. Seeds from related plants have been found in Mexico, dating back over 7000 years to 5500 B.C.

Native American Indians used pumpkin as a staple in their diets centuries before the pilgrims landed. When white settlers arrived, they saw the pumpkins grown by the Indians. Pumpkin soon became a staple in their diets, too. They also brought seeds back to Europe, where they quickly became popular. Just like today, early settlers used pumpkins in a wide variety of recipes, from desserts to stews and soups. In addition to cooking with pumpkins, they also dried the shells and cut strips to weave into mats.

Early settlers made pumpkin pie by filling a hollowed out shell with milk, honey and spices, then baking it.Whether they learned this from Native Americans is not known.

Leafy Dragon Fish

Much like the seahorse, the leafy sea dragon's name is derived from its resemblance to another creature.
While not large by sea monster standards, they are slightly larger than most sea horses, growing to about 30cm .
They feed on plankton and small crustaceans.
It is a little hard to see as he blends in with the plants. He is the white creature.

Jellies

On a recent trip to Los Angeles, I explored the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.
Taking photos was quite a problem since it was dark and what light there was was backlit.
I will be posting only a few photos as most were too blurry to share.
